What advice would you give to someone considering taking this course?
Anonymous: If you are interested in learning more about applied spectroscopy, especially applied NMR spectroscopy to deduce molecular structure, you should take this module. It is especially useful if you want to do research lab and learn how to use 2D NMR to deduce or assign molecular structures.

What did you enjoy or find most useful from this course?
Anonymous: Prof Ge's teaching is very good because he shows a very detailed, step-by-step methodological way in solving the NMR spectra questions. The main takeaway from this module is the problem-solving skills in applied NMR to deduce the molecular structure. Both 1D and 2D NMR questions felt like a puzzle to be solved that required a lot of deep thinking.

What aspects of the course did you find most challenging, and why?
Anonymous: The final exam questions were extremely challenging, because of the time limit and the fact that you can get stuck very very easily when solving the NMR spectra. And, you will need to strain your eyes and think very deeply when solving 2D NMR spectra questions due to many small dots in the spectra. But, overall, I found the module very interesting because it felt like solving a very extensive puzzle.

What resources did you find most helpful in helping you better understand the course material?

Anonymous: Prof Ge has recommended 2 textbooks for more practice if necessary. But, the best practice will be the project questions Prof Ge has given, because it has very similar question style to exam questions and is more representative of the final exam questions in terms of difficulty level.

What other courses do you think should be taken before or concurrently with this module?
​
Anonymous: Take CM2122 before CM4225. Not only because it is a pre-requisite, but also there is a build-up in knowledge from the spectroscopy part of CM2122.
