Course Overview:

This is one of the 4 core Level 2 courses for Chemistry. It covers physical chemistry. The course is split into 2 parts, and is often taught by different lecturers. Depending on the semester, it may be taught in either order.

  • Thermodynamics: Perfect and real gases, the Zeroth-Third Law, State functions (temperature, pressure, volume, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, internal energy), Path functions (heat and work), Thermodynamic processes (isothermal, isobaric, isovolumetric, adiabtic), Chemical and phase equilibria (first order phase transitions only), Basic thermodynamic relations, Mixtures and colligative properties

  • Quantum and Spectroscopy: Basic postulates, Time-Independent Schrödinger equation, Dgrees of Freedom and Quantum theories of motion (Particle-in-a-box, harmonic oscillator, rigid rotor), Quantum treatment of molecules (Born-Oppenheimer approximation), Basic principles of spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR and Raman, Microwave, NMR), their selection rules, and coupling of motion (Franck–Condon principle)
