CM3221 ORGANIC SYNTHESIS: THE DISCONNECTION APPROACH
Academic Year 21/22 - Semester 1
Assessments:
-
Quiz 1 (LumiNUS, Zoom Proctoring): 10%
-
CA1 (In-person): 40%
-
Quiz 2 (LumiNUS, Zoom Proctoring): 10%
-
CA2 (In-person): 40%
Lecturer(s) and Tutor(s): A/P Zhao Yu & Asst Prof Koh Ming Joo
Review 1
Module Overview:
The first part is more familiar to most of us as we will learn how to identify disconnections (1,1 C-X disconnections) and methods to synthesise. The second part is new as we learn how to synthesise aromatic and saturated heterocycles and learn new topics such as silicon and boron.
How did you find the assessments:
Although the lecture and tutorials were easy to understand and attempt, the CA1 was a little challenging. The test is also open-book but you will not be able to find the answers inside because the assessments test on your understanding and are application-based. For CA2, it was slightly more manageable and it is also open-book.
Apart from the assessments, how was your experience with this module:
I would recommend this module for those who are extremely interested in Organic Chemistry and retrosynthesis. While the lectures are interesting, you would need to put in a lot of effort to practice as there are a lot of ways to do the disconnection methods. Nonetheless, you may consider taking up this module if you would like to challenge yourself!
